An Objective View Into DCIM

How General Microsystems helps clients minimize operational costs

by Barbara Morris, Editor, The DCIM Advisory

Data center operators continue to be hit by rising power costs and challenged to manage complex facilities. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the cost to power a server over its lifetime will soon exceed the original capital expenditure. In addition, Gartner estimates that organizations underutilize between 40 and 60 percent of server rack space and waste up to 30 percent of available power. Both problems can cause unnecessary expenditures. Fortunately, new tools for data center infrastructure management (DCIM) have transformed data center management. Case in point: General Microsystems Inc. (GMI). Read more.

What Is Your Biggest Data Center Challenge?

Last Issue's Challenge Solved:

I’d like to make a move into DCIM in my data center, but it seems like a huge expense and time commitment. Is there an easier, faster way?

Many data center managers would like to migrate off spreadsheets and Visio diagrams into an enterprise-class data center infrastructure management (DCIM) solution. But accomplishing this can seem overwhelming — risky, complex and time-consuming. Gaining executive approval is challenging, and managers may face serious time restrictions, even though their data center is forecast to need this type of solution as it grows in size and complexity. Fortunately, a low-risk first step for organizations struggling to manage their data centers with manual or homegrown tools is available. nlyte Express is perfect for data centers that can’t afford the expense to upgrade to an enterprise-class DCIM solution.
